BLACKWAVE. ELUSIVE

Introducing blackwave., the Belgium-based collaboration between Antwerp producer Willem Ardui and rapper Jay Walker who - through a shared love of eclectic music - began making jazzy, funk and alternative hip-hop under a joint moniker. With influences from The Roots, Mos Def, The Pharcyde, Fleet Foxes and Brockhampton, Ardui and Walker have carved out their own space with a string of releases throughout 2017, including the audio version of ‘Elusive’. However, this video comes as a very nice reminder and opportunity for first time listeners to find their way to blackwave.’s smooth grooves. Here we see the pair, accompanied by a backing band, through different studio spaces, with Ardui taking on the role of distracted lover struggling with a relationship that’s reaching its inevitable end, but still he tries to keep it going. A third voice has been added to blackwave. here in the form of singer David Ngyah who’s sandpapery soulness provides to over-arching motif of the single - “she took the funk out of my soul” - a reluctant, possible final admittance that sees Ngyah left alone on the beach; a metaphor for breaking away from a painful relationship. The variety of scenes, emotions, instruments and genres showcased within ‘Elusive’ is a testament to blackwave.’s ingenious talents. - HT
